Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP administers the Nairobi Convention for the Protection, Management and Development of the Coastal and Marine Environment of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The Contracting Parties to the Convention are Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and United Republic of Tanzania. UN Environment’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The Nairobi Convention Secretariat is seeking a competent, creative and motivated Communications and Multimedia Intern. The Internship will be for a minimum of three (3) months and a maximum of six (6) months within the Regional Seas Branch, Ecosystems Division, UNEP. The timing of the internship can be flexible according to the prospective interns’ availability and academic constraints. The objective of our Communications Unit is to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve strategic goals. This includes managing the organization’s image, creating awareness, facilitating stakeholder engagement, and enhancing brand awareness. Content and methodology of the supervision: General objectives, desired results and anticipated problems are discussed beforehand with the intern. Regular feedback on the progress of activities is obtained by the supervisor through periodic reviews of ongoing work. The intern is expected to carry out the duties under general supervision and to consult with the supervisor(s) on issues related to policy, governance or other sensitive matters. Duties and Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Nairobi Convention, the Intern will assist in planning, researching, production, and release of communications and multimedia materials on a broad range of marine and coastal topics across the Western Indian Ocean region. Specifically, the Intern will assist in the planning, researching, production, and release of communications and multimedia materials on a broad range of marine and coastal issues in the Western Indian Ocean region and from the reporting mechanisms of the Nairobi Convention’s Contracting Parties. Tasks and responsibilities will focus on multimedia production and communication: • Photo and video editing and production • Supporting design of infographics and publicity products from the Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties • Updating news, events and documents to the Nairobi Convention website • Maintaining an updated content plan within the 6 months of engagement • Assisting with drafting website articles, social media posts and other visibility outputs relevant to the Nairobi Convention for dissemination on Instagram, Facebook, X and LinkedIn • Collaborating with technical and communications teams to draft informative web articles and human-interest stories • Supporting dissemination of Nairobi Convention communication products on the website, newspapers and social media platforms.


Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: Applicants should either: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) (b) e enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in journalism and communications, media production, graphic design, information technology, or a related field. Demonstrate the following competencies • Communication: Writes clearly and effectively; listens actively; tailors communication products to the audience. • Technological Awareness: Keeps up-to-date with relevant tools and software in video, web, and design production. • Creativity: Offers new and innovative ideas; creates impactful and visually appealing content. • Teamwork: Collaborates effectively; shares credit for team accomplishments. Language; Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required. Knowledge of French is an asset.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. For the post advertised, knowledge and fluency in English is required. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
